The famous 4 letter L Word

I came across this quote recently:

If you want to leave footprints in the sands of time, don’t drag your feet.

Arnot L. Sheppard

So much has been said about this famous 4-letter word called Love. Some may even suggest that this word has received too much attention. Yet if you look at most of our problems they all come back to issues concerning Love. This simply means that we haven’t figured it out.

The words of a famous poet, “If at first you don’t succeed, Try, try, try again” reflect the quote above. If we hope to leave nice, visible footprints (read impact in life) we have to work at it – not drag our feet.

We’re sometimes misled that love is this great feeling we have that makes us soar and fly on the magic carpet (am a big fan of Alladin cartoon). Love has very little to do with feelings. It’s a decision we make to love another person and treat them well sometimes even when they don’t deserve it. Tough, huh?

When I first read 1 Corinthians 13 I was baffled by how much “work” love requires.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

Have you ever deeply thought about this? It easy to expect these things from the people we love but do we do them? How often do you like to have your way? Do you keep a record (even a mental one) of all the wrongs done to you by your friend/family/spouse? Are you patient? – don’t be quick to answer. I know you waited for her for an hour but how did you behave during that hour? Did you talk about it for days on end?

These characteristics of Love are hard to attain, they require a lot of effort and prayer. If there is a place that tests you in this area, it is marriage. It is such an eye opener!! I haven’t been married for long but I have discovered so much about myself because a spouse is like a mirror. I thought very highly of myself before I got married. I described myself as kind, caring and all other stuff we like to say about ourselves. Now I know better 🙂

I’ve discovered how selfish I can be (when you think YOUR way is the BEST and try to convince him how awesome YOUR point is). I have learnt that sometimes (not always) I’m right and I don’t have to be unkind about it….All I can say is I’m learning that I’m not perfect at Love and I can get better if I keep trying.

So, today do something good for the one you love. Call your folks and tell them how awesome they are. Men, ignore the stares of other men as you carry those flowers in town. Your girlfriend/wife will appreciate your sacrifice and will make it worth your while! Wives, today cook him great dinner and listen to him before you tell him all the things you need for the house.

Have a day full of Love!
